Mountain Biking in Tekapo

Mountain Biking in Tekapo is mostly easy along well formed trails. Lake Tekapo lies in the centre of the South Island; this highland lake and settlement at 710 meters (2300 feet) is in the heart of the Mackenzie District and less than an hours drive to Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Lake Tekapo's geographical and central location is protected from rough coastal weather by the Southern Alps in the west and the Two Thumb Range to the east. This allows this highland location to enjoy some of the highest sunshine hours and lowest average wind speeds in New Zealand.

The current recognised mountain bike trails in Tekapo are:

  1. Macaulay Valley Trail, Grade: 2, 18km one way...
  2. Godley Valley Trail, (Red Stag Hut),
    Grade: 2 Distance: 25 km one way
  3. Richmond Trail, Grade: 4 Distance: 13 km one way
  4. Cowans Hill Trail, Grade: 2 Distance: 3.2 km
  5. Simons Hill Trail (Conservation Area),
    Grade: 2, Distance: 7 km one way
